History of Juvederm
Dermal fillers have not always been as reliable, safe, or long lasting as the filler we know and love today. Prior to the first creation of the first hyaluronic acid based filler in 1989 there was dermal filler made from fat, animal collagen, and even paraffin wax or silicone. Early fillers often came with significant risks, including allergic reactions, lumpiness, and migration under the skin. While these early methods laid the foundation for modern advancements, it wasn’t until hyaluronic acid fillers were introduced that dermal fillers became a widely accepted and trusted option for facial rejuvenation.
Let’s talk more about the history of hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid is one of the most readily available skincare ingredients in the world so it’s hard to imagine a time without it. HA was first discovered nearly a century ago in 1934 when two scientists realized that you could isolate HA from the eyes of cows.Research in the 40s and 50s revealed its impressive water-retention capacity–up to 1000 times its weight. This brings us to the 1970s where the first pharmaceutical grade hyaluronic acid was produced and led to Allergan, the original creators of Botox, researching HA and its potentialities. Following their research they realized that HA was suitable for soft tissue repair and smoothing wrinkles and in 2006 the FDA approved Juvederm for treating facial wrinkles and folds.
