Are you considering non-surgical facial rejuvenation? Botox® and Juvederm® are two of the most popular options available as they are highly effective for reducing signs of facial aging.
At Flawless Med Spa, we recognize the growing preference for non-surgical anti-aging treatments, and that’s why we offer a range of minimally invasive procedures, including Botox® and Juvederm®.
When considering these procedures, patients often ask the question, “What is the difference between Botox® and Juvederm®?” Here’s what you need to know.
What is Botox®
Botox® is a neurotoxin that works by blocking the nerve signals that cause the muscles to contract. This process limits muscle movement and smooths the skin, making wrinkles less noticeable.
Dynamic wrinkles form over time because of the muscle contractions that occur with facial expressions such as smiling, squinting, and frowning. Botox® is mostly used to smooth dynamic wrinkles. Crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and frown lines are the most common types of dynamic wrinkles.
What is Juvederm®
Juvederm® is a leading brand of dermal fillers that is a hyaluronic acid (HA). HA occurs naturally in the body and keeps the skin supple and hydrated. When Juvederm® is injected into the soft tissues of the face, the HA particles attract and hold water. This process adds volume to the skin and helps fill in wrinkles and folds.
What Cosmetic Issues Can Juvederm® Address?
Juvederm® plumps fine lines and wrinkles caused by the loss of facial volume. It also improves facial contours by restoring volume to the cheeks, mid-face, and lips.
The Juvederm® family of fillers includes:
- Juvederm® Vollure™ XC, Juvederm® Ultra XC, and Juvederm® Ultra Plus XC for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, including nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
- Juvederm® Voluma™ XC for age-related volume loss in the cheeks and midface.
- Juvederm® Volbella™ XC and Juvederm® Ultra XC for lip augmentation.
What Is the Difference Between Botox® and Juvederm®?
Botox® and Juvederm® can both turn back the clock on facial aging and restore a more youthful appearance, but they work in different ways and target separate areas of the face.
Botox® is a muscle relaxer, while Juvederm® is a dermal filler. Botox® reduces wrinkles by relaxing the underlying muscles, so it is effective for wrinkles caused by muscle movement. However, some wrinkles develop due to loss of volume in the skin. Juvederm® fills in these types of wrinkles because it adds volume to the soft tissue.
Botox® is used to smooth wrinkles in the upper half of the face – across the forehead and around the eyes. Juvederm®, on the other hand, corrects wrinkles in the lower half of the face around the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds and marionette lines).
The effects of Botox® last about 3 months on average, but the results of Juvederm® generally last longer. Depending on the specific filler selected and the area of the face targeted, Juvederm® can last up to 12 months.
Juvederm® is composed of hyaluronic acid, while Botox® contains diluted amounts of botulinum toxin type A, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
