Semaglutide is a peptidic GLP-1 receptor agonist. GLP-1 is a hormone in the body that is responsible for controlling hunger levels. Semaglutide interacts with this peptide hormone, resulting in the patient feeling satiated after eating a smaller amount of calories than they normally would. 

Semaglutide also induces insulin secretion from the pancreas in instances where blood sugar levels are too high. Beyond that, it slows down the digestive process by causing food to pass through the digestive tract more slowly. This is known as “gastric emptying,” and it causes a reduction in appetite as well as an increase in weight loss.  

Semaglutide injections are typically administered every two weeks or once a month. If needed, the dosage will be increased over time for better results. The injections are found to be painless by most patients and are typically administered in the midsection, upper arm, or thighs.
